I just finished a new book by author Lindsay Buroker. Fractured Stars is another great space opera seemingly set in the same universe as her Fallen Empire and Sky Full of Stars series. Although this book is said to be a standalone, I seriously hope there are more books to come for these characters.
One thing I really liked about this book was that the main character, McCall Richter is firmly on the spectrum. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t interesting or a complex character. Ms. Buroker has a talent of creating unique and multifaceted characters that come alive on the page and this book is no exception. Her females are always strong, smart, and wholly likable. They also typically have a certain quirk that endears them to their love interest.
Lindsay Buroker is one of my all-time favorite authors and I highly recommend checking out this book or one of her many other series. If space opera isn’t to your taste, don’t worry she writes in several different genres. She even writes romance under the pen name, Ruby Lionsdrake. One thing all of her book have in common is strong story, great characters, and a touch of her unique sense of humor.
I don’t normally recommend books that are exclusive to a single retailer. The reason I’m making an exception here is because there are other ways to get her books before they go on sale by becoming a pateron on her Patreon page. She releases books early through the Pateron site, and in multiple formats. She also typically takes her books wide once the initial three month enrollment period is over.

I just finished reading Saint or Sinner, the latest in Cynthia Eden’s Bad Things Series. Saint or Sinner, is book eight in the series. While Cynthia Eden uses familiar paranormal characters she has a way of making them her own.
If you like paranormal romance, then you should definitely check out this series. The first book in the series is, The Devil in Disguise. This book introduces Luke Thorne—ruler of all the dark paranormals. Luke is one of the major characters in this series and he is probably one of my favorite “bad” guys.
The Devil in Disguise ebook is currently free on all major retailers so it’s a great time to give the series a shot. I have a feeling once you read the first one you’ll be hooked.
She has several paranormal romance series. I haven’t had a chance to read them yet, but they are definitely on my to be read list for this year.
Happy Reading

The past few weeks, I’ve been reading a “new to me” series. As you’ve probably figured out if you’ve read my previous posts about what I’m reading, I read a variety of genres. And I prefer series. Although, I do also read standalone titles as well.
The latest series that I’m loving is, The Elder Races by Thea Harrison. It’s a fantasy romance series that deals with The Elder Races. These are the Wyrkind, the Nightkind, The Light Fae, The Dark Fae, and the Demonkind. This series is set in the familiar surroundings of the United States, which has been divided into demesnes by the different Elder Races.
Book one in this series is, Dragon Bound. It introduces you to Dragos Cuelebre and Pia Giovanni, two characters that are seen throughout the series. Dragos is the head of the Wrykind. He also happens to be the only known dragon shifter and a force to be reckoned with.
Ms. Harrison has created a magical world, full of colorful characters that you can’t help but fall in love with. I love that you get to see more of her world with each book. She doesn’t stay within one demesne, but instead gives you an up close look at each of the Elder Races and how they are different. While also showing you that while they are vastly different in some ways, they are also very much the same in others.
If you love fantasy, then I think you’ll love this series just as much as I do. I can’t wait to read more about the sentinels, or to learn more about some of the races we’ve yet to see up close. There’s a certain gargoyle I can’t wait to learn more about. This series has become an auto-buy for me. I still have a few books left in the series yet (this includes the novellas) but once I finish I plan to check out some of Ms. Harrison’s other series as well.
Happy Reading.

I recently picked up a book by a new to me author, Lexi Blake. I read the first one and then realized there was an entire other series leading up to this one, so I had to go back and start at the beginning.
So I picked up book one in her Masters & Mercenaries Series, The Dom Who Loved Me. This book is about Sean Taggart and Grace Hawthorne. I fell in love with these characters and the writing of Ms. Blake. She has a way of drawing you in and keeping you there from the first page to the last.
There are currently sixteen books in the series with almost as many novellas. (Something I didn’t realize until recently) I just finished the last book in the main series and will be going back to read the many novellas now.
There are other series, including a multi-author crossover series, that tie into the main one. A new tie-in series will be coming in August. It’s called Masters & Mercenaries: The Forgotten. I look forward to reading the new series, as well as her other books.
If you like a good storyline, strong characters, well-written sex scenes, and plenty of action, then you’ll like Lexi Blake. Be sure to stop by her website http://www.lexiblake.net to check out her books and sign up for her newsletter.
What are you reading lately?
by Nikki Amare | Apr 11, 2018 | Musings, What I'm Reading
I’ve read two books lately that I loved. While they are completely different genres and at first glance appear to have nothing in common, I realized that they actually do have quite a few similarities.
They are both stories with females who are smart, who are fiercely protective of those they consider family, and who refuse to stay in the little boxes that society has tried to put them in. I love strong female characters who stand tall and show that being different isn’t just okay but that it’s a good thing. After all, if we were all the same how boring would that be?
The first book is a steampunk mystery by Shelley Adina. It is the first book in a new series, but is set in the same world as her Magnificent Devices series. (If you haven’t ready Magnificent Devices then I highly recommend it. It starts with the book Lady of Devices)
The title is: The Bride Wore Constant White and it is Book one of the Mysterious Devices series.
This book is listed as a clockwork cozy mystery. It takes place in the United States, but not as we know them. While there are some familiar characters from the Magnificent Devices Series, if you haven’t read that series you don’t have to worry about being lost.
This book is full of unforgettable characters and smart women who are brave enough to stand up and be noticed in a world—an era—where they are expected to sit down and be invisible until told to do otherwise.
Shelly Adina has created a world that is unique and yet easy to imagine. I look forward to reading more of her books in the future.
The second book is a paranormal romance by Shelly Laurenston. It takes place in the same world as her other shifter books. If you’ve read any of her other shifter book then you’re likely to recognize a few familiar characters. If you haven’t read her other books, then I highly recommend them. You can start with the Magnus Pack or the Pride Stories. Both Series take place in the same world. You can find a complete list of her books by series HERE.
The title is: Hot and Badgered
I hate when Shelly Laurenston has a new release because I’m going to be sleep deprived from staying up all night reading and hubby is going to look at me like I’ve lost my mind when I just bust out laughing at random times. I do not recommend reading this (or any of her books) in public unless you don’t mind the looks. And whatever you do, DON’T drink any liquids while reading. Snorting tea through your nose is not a pleasant experience. I can personally attest to this.
But she is definitely an auto-buy for me and I can’t wait for her next book. She has a sense of humor that I identify with. Her characters are flawed (sometimes DEEPLY) but they are all lovable in their own way. She has her own unique take on shifters that sets her apart from all of those other shifter books out there.
If you haven’t read her other books, don’t worry about not being able to follow along. Most of her books can be read as standalones but you get more out of them when you have the knowledge of the other characters in this world. This book is a great introduction to her world and I have a feeling that once you read it you will want to go back and read the others.
You can find the full list of her books on her website.
So, that’s what I’ve been reading lately. What books have you read recently that you’ve loved? Feel free to share them in the comments.

Like most writers I know, I’m a reader first. I don’t have nearly as much time to read as I used, which means I’m more critical of what I do read. I want a book that’s well written with great characters that pull me in. I recently found a paranormal romance author who did just that.
The author in question is Heather Long. She appears to write in several different genres and I plan to give each and every one of them a try. However, the series I just finished reading was The Wolves of Willow Bend Series.
This series is one that has great characters you can’t help but fall in love with, some kickass females,—which I love. No damsels in distress here—and great storylines. It’s set in the United States and while the Willow Bend Pack is prominent throughout the books, you are introduced to other packs as well. There is a strong theme of family, and what that means in the books. I can’t wait to see where she takes the series. This one will definitely be an auto buy for me from now on. I’m looking forward to the next book.
If you like shifter romance, then you should definitely give The Wolves of Willow Bend Series, by Heather Long a read and be sure to check out the rest of her books as well.
